A scientific approach

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a therapeutic approach developed to help individuals cope with and process the traumatic effects of stressful and traumatic situations. The method was developed by American psychologist Francine Shapiro in the 1980s.

EMDR is based on the idea that unresolved traumatic memories can be stored dysfunctionally in the brain, leading to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other anxiety disorders. This approach aims to help individuals reprocess these traumatic memories in such a way as to reduce their negative emotional charge and integrate them more effectively into their memory.

How an EMDR session works

EMDR treatment generally takes place in several stages:

1. Preparation: The therapist works with the patient to assess his or her history and ability to manage the treatment. Relaxation techniques can be taught to help the patient cope with potential emotional stress.

2. Assessment: The patient identifies specific traumatic memories and associated emotions. The therapist then guides the patient to follow eye movements or other bilateral stimuli while focusing on the traumatic memory.

3. Desensitization: As the patient follows eye movements or other bilateral stimuli, the aim is to reduce the negative emotional charge associated with the traumatic memory. Patients are encouraged to observe their thoughts and emotions without judgment.

4. Reprogramming: Once the emotional charge has diminished, the patient is guided to re-examine the memory in a more positive and constructive way, integrating new beliefs or perceptions.

5. Final assessment: The therapist works with the patient to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment and to ensure that the traumatic memory has been correctly reprocessed.
